Burkburnett council approves using opioid settlement funds to lease park security cameras

A staff presenter described recent camera trials at the pickleball courts and Friendship Park and said replacement or leasing options had been explored. Staff said the outright purchase price with a one-year license would be $11,211, while the recommended five-year maintenance and lease program would cost about $4,800 a year; including installation, staff said the first-year cost would be $5,880. Under the lease-and-maintenance option, Centrio would handle monitoring and replacement of failed units.
Staff recommended using opioid settlement funds to cover the initial year while budgeting for subsequent years in the regular budget. The presenter said there are additional opioid settlement rounds expected, which would replenish the fund. Council members asked whether previously approved lighting work at the pickleball courts would be affected; staff said the lighting work was paid from the prior allocation and the remaining opioid funds could be reworked via a budget amendment to cover the camera contract.
A council member moved to approve using opioid settlement funds to contract with Centrio for the five-year maintenance and lease program; the motion was seconded and passed unanimously.
Next steps: staff will draft the contract with Centrio, complete installation and return with any required budget amendments for ongoing annual costs.
