Resident urges equal treatment for people jailed over probation violations

Mohammed Mohammed Shalabad Malik, a Naples resident, used the meeting's public-comment period on May 7 to press the committee to help people jailed for probation violations.
"I have over a 100 people that a 100 and something people that are incarcerated for probation violation," Malik said, asking whether the city could guide him on ensuring those incarcerated for probation violations had options such as bail or bond and were treated equally under the law. He said he wanted guidance and assistance so citizens would not be treated differently by the local system.
The chair responded that the committee's charter for that day was limited to evaluating audit firms and did not give the panel authority to act on criminal-justice or jail-release policies. "This committee doesn't have a role in that," the chair said, but added the comment would be forwarded to the city manager and the city attorney and asked Malik to provide contact information so staff could follow up.
Malik said he would return for the full city council meeting if necessary and pressed for a city-level response. The committee did not take action on the request during the meeting; staff said they would pass the comment to the appropriate city offices for follow-up.
