County moves ahead with Wiggins Pass dredging; Doctors Pass mapping and bidding to follow

Katie Lachinen told the committee on Jan. 22 that the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers has issued the permit for Wiggins Pass, the Wiggins bid opened Jan. 19 with four respondents and county staff are qualifying the lowest bidder. Staff said mapping of Doctors Pass is underway to estimate cubic yardage, after which the county will finalize and post a bid package for Doctors Pass so work on the two passes can progress simultaneously.
"The hope is, since the Wiggins Pass contractors already mobilized, that they would bid on the Doctors Pass work," Lachinen said, noting the county aims to leverage mobilization to lower costs and compress the schedule.
Staff also reported that a buoy marking a high spot at the mouth of Doctors Pass shifted during recent weather and will be moved back; the light on the marker has been repaired. Lachinen said she confirmed with the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission (FWC) and the U.S. Coast Guard that flashing lights are permitted only on navigational markers, and non-navigational markers may not carry flashing lights because they can confuse boaters.
The committee was told the Collier County Citizens Advisory Committee will meet Feb. 12 for a comprehensive Doctors Pass update from county staff (Andy Miller will present), and that the meeting is broadcast on Collier County TV.
