Chase County adopts ambulance debt write-off and approves Wauneta EMS interlocal agreement

Chase County commissioners on April 28 voted unanimously to adopt Resolution 2026-6, cancelling $33,689.24 in outstanding ambulance accounts and to sign an interlocal agreement with the Village of Wauneta covering utilities for a county-owned ambulance storage building.
The board considered three exhibits related to uncollectable ambulance receivables: $7,979.45 in Credit Management accounts beyond the statute of limitations; $24,742.55 in in-house collections from 2023–2024 with no recent activity; and $967.24 in One Billing Solutions accounts listed as deceased, with no estate, or beyond claim. Commissioner Jacci Brown moved to approve the resolution; the motion was seconded by Chairman Kurt Bernhardt and approved by Commissioners Billie Muehlenkamp, Jacci Brown and Kurt Bernhardt (all yes). A complete copy of Resolution 2026-6 is filed with the county clerk.
County Attorney Burke presented a proposed interlocal agreement by and between the Village of Wauneta and Chase County regarding the building in Wauneta used to store ambulances; under the agreement the Village will pay utilities associated with the operation and maintenance of the building while the County retains ownership. Commissioner Brown moved to authorize signing the agreement as written; the motion passed unanimously. The agreement will be sent to the Village of Wauneta for their review and approval.
The board also recorded routine payroll and claims approvals for multiple county funds during the meeting.
Next steps: the county will forward the signed interlocal agreement to the Village of Wauneta for consideration; the resolution and supporting exhibits remain on file at the county clerk’s office.
