Knox County opens bids for 2026 road resurfacing and asphalt patching

The Knox County Board of Commissioners opened two bid packages May 12 for the county’s 2026 pavement work, receiving a single bid for annual resurfacing and multiple bids for asphalt patching materials.
The chair announced the annual resurfacing package from Smalls Asphalt Paving and reported a single bid totaling $822,263.41. County engineer Cameron Keaton told commissioners the bid was the only submission for that package and staff will verify compliance and bonds before making a recommendation.
Keaton gave the list of roads planned for resurfacing in 2026: “Dunham Road, Montgomery Road, Nectar Road, Utica Road, Vincent Road, Majors Road, Prospect Road, and Brinkhaven Road.” He said treatment will vary by condition — some stretches will receive an overlay (about 1¼"–1½"), a leveling course and a chip seal, while roads in better condition will receive chip seal only — and staff will follow up with the exact treatment for each road.
On the asphalt patching-materials package, commissioners were presented preliminary bid totals. Keaton read the vendor figures on the record: Mid Ohio at $473,048.50; Smalls Asphalt Paving (listed in the packet) at about $500,505; and a third bidder listed at $669,250. He said staff will check math and bonds, prepare a bid tabulation, and circulate the tabulation to bidders before recommending award.
No formal contract awards were made at the meeting. Keaton said the county will complete its review of the bids and return to the board with a formal recommendation.
