County affirms $7,392 change order to meet ADA ramp specifications at community service building

County Development Director Eric Furnace briefed the Muscatine County Board on a needed change order for the community service building repairs project.
Furnace said concealed foundation-wall conditions discovered when removing the old ramp prevented pouring the new ramp at the planned thickness. To meet modern ADA requirements'which limit ramp runs to 20 feet and require 5-foot landings'the contractor proposed a design with a singular capped ramp and level landings. Furnace said he approved the change order earlier to avoid holding up progress and asked the board to affirm that decision. "I went ahead and approved it because it was gonna hold up progress," he said.
Furnace described the selected solution as the best long-term approach to avoid overly thin concrete sections and said the work should close out that part of the project. The board affirmed the change order by motion and second.
Furnace also provided project updates on sidewalk and parking-lot striping at the jail, underground utility work at the new Engineering and Zoning building and progress at the Deep Lakes Maintenance Building.
