Southgate board ratifies tentative SPSA agreement that classifies athletic director as administrative role

The Southgate Community School District Board approved a tentative agreement with SPSA at its May 12 meeting. Staff said the agreement has been ratified by the unit and that, under its language, the athletic director role is classified as an administrative position rather than a teaching-unit assignment.
A staff speaker explained that the role "has been filled with a teacher for the last 3 or 4 years" but that the agreement's language means the district is posting the position as administrative going forward; current teacher athletic directors are still included in the candidate pool. The board approved the tentative agreement by voice vote.
Public commenters had urged the board to retain the current athletic director. Ashley Lareau, a resident, praised the athletic director’s leadership and community commitment and asked the board to keep him in the role. Aaron Fisay, a parent and resident, warned that replacing the athletic director now could jeopardize investments in athletic facilities and the momentum of the district’s athletic programs.
The motion to approve the tentative agreement passed by voice vote. Staff indicated the posting for the administrative athletic director role will proceed as part of the contract finalization process.
