Coffee County Highway Commission reviews 2026 paving list, announces SS4A grant

The Coffee County Highway Commission met Jan. 7, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. in the Administrative Plaza meeting room. Benton Bartlett, Highway Superintendent, and Joseph Dobson, Assistant Highway Superintendent, reported on maintenance operations and a new SS4A grant to support road maintenance data.
Bartlett said mechanics are performing annual maintenance, crews are repairing shoulders and patching potholes, and the department is testing a new hot‑mix material. He said the commission is reviewing the 2026 paving list and planning for the upcoming season; he also reported that oil prices have remained reasonable. Bartlett announced that the county received an SS4A grant and that he will attend a workshop later in the month; the grant will be used to scan and maintain road maintenance data, Bartlett said.
Dobson reported crews are completing tree cleanup from the Dec. 18, 2025, storm, installing several new driveway tiles, and performing ditching where needed. He provided a response phone number for urgent citizen requests: 728‑9555.
Commission members raised localized road concerns. Mr. Bush, a commission member, asked that David Jacobs Road be added to resurfacing priorities. Mr. Markum, a commission member, reported a pothole at the end of Goosepond Road. Mr. Weaver, a commission member, said trucks serving factories in the new industrial park are using Asbury and Old Airport Roads and asked whether “no truck” signs could be installed because GPS directions are leading trucks down narrow country roads. Bartlett said installing such signs is probably not feasible, and he noted that a car counter was installed on Asbury Road that day to monitor speeds.
On procedural business, Mr. Bush moved to accept the agenda as read; Mr. Markum seconded and the motion carried with all in favor. Mr. Markum then moved to accept the previous month's minutes; Mr. Bush seconded and the motion carried with all in favor. Mr. Bush moved to adjourn later in the meeting; Mr. Markum seconded and the meeting adjourned.
The commission set its next meeting for Feb. 4, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. in Conference Room 1 of the Administrative Plaza.
