The Senate Finance Committee recommended passage of a bill Tuesday that would allow retailers to donate eggs past the companies’ quality-assurance date to food shelves and food banks.
Sponsor Senator McQuaid said donor inspection and relabeling procedures will be required and that state practice in most other states already allows the practice. The Department of Agriculture told the committee it could absorb an estimated $1,000 cost tied to oversight.
Senator Friend moved the measure to be recommended to pass; the committee adopted the bill by voice vote and sent it on for further legislative consideration.
