Wellsville resident urges action on speeding near county line; council to coordinate with sheriff and county

During the public-comment portion of the May 6 meeting, resident Darlin Call, of 625 East 200 South, urged the council to address persistent high speeds on a county road near her house. Call said she had contacted the sheriff's office multiple times and received little response; she said one deputy told her the unmarked county road is 55 mph unless county signage designates otherwise.
Call said: "The cars that go past that road are absolutely flying by." She asked whether Wellsville could petition the county to place lower posted limits and whether the city could help arrange signage that would enable enforcement. Council members asked their law-enforcement liaison to follow up with the deputy and seek county cooperation; Sheriff Chad Janssen later offered to work with the city and the county road department to mark the roadway at 40 mph as a compromise.
Council did not adopt an ordinance; members directed staff and the sheriff's office to pursue clarification on jurisdiction, possible signage and enforcement options.
