Sheriff Chad Janssen appeared before the Wellsville City Council on May 6 to review service levels and a contract proposal for the county-to-municipal policing agreement. Janssen said the sheriff's office has taken 541 calls for service in the first nine months (projecting roughly 650 for the year) and described the office's effort to align contract hours with actual service.
Janssen told the council that his proposal would keep the contracted hours at 2,089 and phase in modest hourly-rate increases over the next three years to reflect actual costs. In his presentation he described the plan as incremental increases "from 60 to 64 to 68" (dollars per hour) and emphasized workforce pressures and retention challenges in the region.
He also offered to work with the city on the resident's earlier speeding concern and said he would contact county officials and the road department about marking the county road and reducing posted speed toward 40 mph where appropriate.
Council members asked for more detail on the cost impacts and agreed by motion to have staff (with Scott) examine the contract and return to the council at a later meeting for further consideration. No contract was signed or approved at this meeting.
