The Thief River Falls City Council voted to allow the city administrator to approve a contract extension with HDR Engineering to add an additional roundabout and expanded video modeling to the Trunk Highway 59 corridor study.
A city staff member told the council the additional work would “fully vet that fourth roundabout into the plan” and produce another video model; the staff member said “the full contract request for the additional work is 32,000.” Under the existing partnership with the Minnesota Department of Transportation, the city is expected to pay 10% of the additional cost while MnDOT pays the remaining 90%.
Council members asked for a printed map and public viewing options so residents and stakeholders, including local biking advocates, can review the proposed layout. The staff member said an eight‑foot stakeholder map exists and that the new layout file would be available for printing and for public display; he recommended the expanded video so the design could be placed on the city website.
The chair moved to authorize the extension and any MnDOT reimbursement agreement; the motion passed on a voice vote.
The contract extension is expected to allow the corridor study to incorporate additional traffic scenarios and to complete the project by August, according to staff.
