The Avoyelles Parish Police Jury voted May 12 to place a proposed 10‑year extension and rededication of a parish millage on the ballot to continue funding public health units and to establish an animal shelter.
Chair presented the draft ballot language stating the millage would continue for 10 years beginning 2027 and estimated annual collections "reasonably expected at this time" at $787,600. Jurors were told the parish currently holds a surplus of roughly $5.2 million derived from the tax that could be available for immediate use on projects tied to the millage.
Jurors discussed wording and perception — whether to use the phrase "animal shelter" or "animal control" — and were told legal counsel can finalize language. One juror described recent survey results, reporting about 200 responses with roughly 99% in favor and that 58% of respondents cited problems with aggressive animals and safety concerns.
The motion to place the extension/rededication on the ballot passed by voice vote. The jury noted the measure would allow the parish to use existing funds and future collections to acquire, construct, improve and operate public health units and an animal shelter, including required equipment.
