Pierce County manager presents January finances and departmental activity; public works reports heavy pothole and grading work

County Manager Thomas Sauls presented the county’s monthly report and year-to-date General Fund figures at the Pierce County Board of Commissioners meeting on Feb. 10.
Sauls reported General Fund revenue YTD as of Dec. 31 of $20,562,042.47 and expenses of $19,858,153.53. He summarized January activity including leadership and interagency meetings, road inspections with road superintendent Bruce Carter and Chairman Neal Bennett, and outreach related to state legislative matters.
Planning and Facilities Director Chris Bond told the board that planning and codes processed nine new home permits in January, performed 86 inspections and accrued $6,211.40 in fees; code changes included revisions to RV park and tiny-home ordinances. Bond’s facilities notes listed multiple HVAC and equipment repairs across county buildings.
Public Works activity reported by road superintendent Bruce Carter included cleaning five culverts, building up four roads, digging 130 ditches, installing or replacing 14 culverts, and patching 221 potholes (five classified as major). Road-grader miles for the month were listed as 1,870.02 miles and total road miles graded 373.95. The report also listed 680 loads of dirt hauled (10,880 cubic yards moved) and multiple sign replacements.
Recreation Director Mo Brown reported on the conclusion of the basketball season and district tournament hosting: Pierce County will host 8U and 14U boys district games; other age groups and locations were assigned to neighboring counties. Brown provided season financial figures including gate and concession totals and noted spring sports registration opened Jan. 5 and closes Feb. 28, with a projected season opener on April 13.
Fire Chief Chris Todd reported 77 calls in January 2026, compared with 64 in January 2025, enumerating call types including two structure fires, 15 grass/woods/brush fires and 18 medical assists.
The sheriff’s office dispatch numbers were included in the record (860 calls for service), and Sauls raised the cost of roadside sign replacement as a recurring expense, estimating $60–$100 per sign and totaling $1,200–$2,000 to replace the 20 signs listed by the road superintendent.
