Maury Recovery Court reports 11 participants after county opioid-fund split

During the May 11 meeting, county staff and contracted partners updated the Board of Supervisors on the Maury Recovery Court, which offers eligible defendants treatment alternatives to incarceration.

Andrew Squires, who identified himself as a senior assistant commonwealths attorney, and Greg Hornback, clinical director at community services, thanked the board for funding and reported the program has 11 participants. Squires noted the board previously approved splitting approximately $107,000 in available opioid funds between Rockbridge Recovery (Hope House) and the Maury Recovery Court, allotting roughly $54,000 to each program.

Hornback described program requirements and supports: participation is voluntary, participants must engage in intensive outpatient treatment (a minimum of nine hours per week, typically three sessions of three hours each), and the program pairs legal supervision with clinical services. Officials reported that, to date, none of the program participants have picked up new charges, and several are now employed and in stable housing.

Participants and court partners said the combination of judicial support and treatment services has helped divert people from jail and is expected to position the program for future operational support from the Commonwealth once the court demonstrates sustained results.

Next steps: program partners will continue reporting outcomes to the board and anticipate Commonwealth operational funding if benchmarks are maintained.
