Newburgh committee: playground rising fast; staff cites $32,000 unexpected cost and plans for concession stand

The Town of Newburgh parks committee heard an upbeat construction update as crews installed playground equipment rapidly and the town set a mid-July completion target.
"The playground goes up fast, and the only thing that really will slow them down, obviously, is weather," said the staff member reporting construction progress, noting crews were working long hours and that concrete and turf subcontractors could affect the schedule. Staff said fencing and signage are in place and police have increased patrols around the site.
Staff also told the committee crews discovered a buried concrete pad during work that added roughly $32,000 to the project: "That was about a $4,000 change, but that just allows us just a cleaner look across the board," and later, "we found an extra $32,000," reflecting several small adjustments made as work progressed. The committee did not take a formal vote on additional funds during the meeting.
In related facility news, staff described plans to standardize building address signs and replace outdated pin-pad locks with a key-fob system that would let administrators cancel individual fobs rather than rekey doors. The same staff member said the Lou building’s interior and exterior are scheduled to be painted before playground completion.
Staff proposed converting a small office within the Lou building into a concession point limited to packaged food (no hot cooking), subject to health-department rules and cost approval. "I'm thinking of turning that into a concession stand for the park... only packaged food," the staff member said, adding the town would likely keep an existing vending machine available when the concession stand was closed.
Staff reported hiring seasonal splash-pad staff and promoting several returning employees to supervisory roles ahead of Memorial Day weekend operations. No formal committee action was taken; staff said they will bring cost estimates and designs back to the committee for follow-up.
The committee expects additional updates and supporting photos at the next regular meeting in June.
