Commission OKs Hanover College subgrant, private donations for Madison–Hanover Connector trailhead

The Redevelopment Commission on May 12 approved a subgrant agreement with Hanover College and accepted private donations to complete a trailhead for the Madison–Hanover Connector Trail and to add sidewalks on Vernon and Vaughn drives.
Tony Steinhardt described leftover grant funds that allowed completion of paving from South Second Street to Vaughn Drive and the design of a trailhead with sidewalks to improve downtown connectivity. He said the project attracted private donations: Indiana Kentucky Electric Corporation contributed $25,000, Madison Railroad $20,000, and Hanover College $100,000. "We're thrilled to be a part of it," Chip Schneider, speaking on behalf of Hanover College, said.
The commission approved the subgrant agreement and accepted the donations by motion and voice vote. Tony also presented change order number 4 for $41,300 to complete paving to the trailhead (funded from grant dollars) and a separate change order from the trailhead contingency to rehabilitate a stone arch (tuckpointing, rock replacement and wall extension to hold added soil); both change orders were approved.
Staff said final asphalt is being laid, guardrail installation is underway, fence installation is expected by week's end and a ribbon-cutting is planned for June. Staff also said paperwork for required state reporting will be completed and mailed to overlapping units after the meeting.
