Porter County 9-1-1 says towns may request consolidation; county sets steps for review

Porter County Central Communications told the Board of Commissioners that updated standard operating procedures for emergency 9-1-1 dispatch took effect April 1, 2026 and reiterated the county's role as the designated primary public-safety answering point. "Effective 04/01/2026, Porter County Central Central Communications implemented updated standard operating procedures for emergency 911 dispatch," Scott said.

Scott said the county has heard that the towns of Chesterton and Porter may be interested in consolidating dispatch operations and that the county is open to discussions but will not require consolidation. "Consolidation is not required, and the decision to pursue consolidation rests entirely with each town," he said.

Scott outlined the steps a town must take to pursue consolidation: the governing town council must pass a resolution formally requesting consolidation and specify the date the town wishes consolidation to take effect. "Upon receipt of such resolution, the commissioners will review the request and work with Porter County Council and the appropriate parties to determine how and when best to proceed," Scott said. The commissioners did not take formal action on consolidation at the meeting and framed the update as informational and a procedural roadmap for any town that chooses to move forward.
