The Board of School Trustees of the Metropolitan School District of Mt. Vernon on April 23, 2026 approved routine financial transactions, accepted several personnel changes and adopted a resolution to submit an instructional day waiver application.
Board President Greg Oeth opened the meeting at Mt. Vernon Senior High School; the Board recognized Marrs Elementary School for outstanding reading achievement at the Indiana State Capitol on April 8, 2026, reporting a 98.2% pass rate on the 2026 IREAD test, above the state goal of 95%.
The Board approved the minutes of April 6, 2026 and authorized payment of payroll checks 408571 through 408950, voucher checks 147627 through 147721, and electronic transfers ET003416 through ET003424. The Board also accepted the March 2026 financial statement; the voucher list and financial statement are attached to the meeting minutes.
In personnel actions, the Board accepted resignations from multiple staff members (including Heather Allyn, Justin Fischer and Cari Kemp) and confirmed new appointments including Amber Allyn as cheerleader sponsor (2/3 stipend), Robin Duncan as head boys' basketball coach, Brad Higginson as strength coach and Sarah Jourdan as speech-language pathologist. The Board accepted the intent to retire from Karen Upshaw, an elementary teacher at FA, effective at the end of the 2025–26 school year; the minutes note she has 32 years of service. The Board also approved a nonpaid leave of absence for maintenance employee Heather Fields from April 2 through May 29, 2026.
The Board adopted a resolution permitting listed personnel to attend an educational meeting and approved the recommended use of district facilities for 2026 summer camps. Members voted to adopt a resolution approving submission of an instructional day waiver application; the resolution is attached to the minutes.
Information presented to the Board included a Self-Insurance Fund report. The Board set future regular meetings for May 4, May 18 and June 1, 2026, all to be held at Mt. Vernon Senior High School. The board also reviewed three new course proposals for possible future action.
After adjourning the regular meeting, the Board met in executive session under Indiana Code IC 5-14-1.5-6.1 Sections (6) and (9) to discuss matters involving individuals under the Board’s jurisdiction and job performance evaluations of individual employees. The executive-session minutes state no other subject was discussed. These minutes were prepared by Stephanie Stewart, Superintendent of Schools.
