Newby Elementary honored as state math bowl champions at Speedway board meeting

The School Town of Speedway board recognized Newby Elementary as state math bowl champions during the May 12 meeting.
Board member (speaker 6) introduced Heather Gorgas as the principal at Newby Elementary. Gorgas recounted the April 14 local competition and said Newby achieved a high score and was later notified it had advanced to become state champions.
"A score of 32 is perfect," Gorgas said when describing the competition scoring and Newby’s performance. She thanked the coach and invited him to speak.
Mister Shoulders, identified in the packet as the math bowl coach, praised the team’s effort and stamina: "Success in math bowl isn't about natural talent or luck ... it's about the grit you show in practice." He named team captains (Eliza Hassett, Ryan and Owen) and additional team members and thanked parents and the board for their support. The board and audience applauded the students and the team posed for a photo.
No formal board action was required; the recognition was ceremonial.
