Dr. Yarlene Farquharson presented the school division’s May corrective action plan (CAP) update on May 11, describing instructional and community initiatives the district plans to continue or expand.
On instructional supports, Farquharson said the district developed a proposal to expand AVID to elementary grades, noting that “AVID is actually going to be K‑12,” and credited staff leadership for the work. She also said the district partnered with the Greensville County Education Foundation to restore mini‑grant awards for teacher innovations.
On nutrition and wellbeing, the director of school nutrition was selected to participate in the Chef Anne Healthy School Food Pathway Fellowship, a program Farquharson said will help strengthen scratch‑cooking and environmentally sustainable practices in school meals.
The update also noted a recent multicultural event at Greensville Elementary and a family survey the district used to gauge interest in home‑delivered, shelf‑stable meal boxes for children ages 1–18.
A student school board member summarized survey results for student voice and communication: average comfort communicating opinions was about 3 on a 1‑to‑5 scale, family responses to whether students had raised unresolved concerns were reported as 24% yes and 42% no, and an overall services rating was given as 3.01 stars. The student representative listed frequently requested changes including longer lunch periods, more field trips and extracurricular offerings.
Farquharson said the items presented align with the district strategic plan and corrective actions; many items will continue to be tracked and return in future reports.
