Malverne Union Free School District honors Class of 2026 academic leaders, teachers and student researchers

Counselors and district officials named Dayami Guaman as valedictorian and Lorraine Acu as salutatorian for the Class of 2026. Lorraine was recognized for an advanced Regents diploma with honors, mastery in mathematics and a weighted GPA cited in remarks as 104.23; her counselor noted she will pursue pre-med at Emory University on a QuestBridge scholarship. Counselors described Dayami's AP coursework, AP Capstone diploma and a QuestBridge national match to Johns Hopkins University.
Dr. Langone, the district's supervisor of STEM and mathematics, recognized three teachers for excellence: Mr. Gerardi for middle-school STEM and robotics mentorship, Mr. Link for high-school science teaching and robotics mentoring, and Miss Kelly for leadership in middle-school research. The Herber Middle School science-research program was highlighted for regional success; project winners and their awards were read aloud (examples include projects on sunscreen/paint interaction, microbial contact transport and the impact of technology on student achievement). Najla Hensford received an Excellence in Educational Innovation award that included a cash prize at a regional fair.
Administrators asked the board to congratulate student-athletes who earned sportsmanship awards from the National Federation of State High School Associations and the New York State Public High School Athletic Association. The Chair reminded the audience of upcoming events, including the Proposition 1 budget vote on May 19 and several end-of-year concerts and award ceremonies.
The recognition segment concluded with group photos and encouragement for students to continue research and leadership as they move on to college and careers.
