Washington County’s Expo manager reported to the commissioners on first-quarter operations on May 12 and described a new in-house hotel occupancy tax (HOT) grant portal intended to simplify applications for local event organizers.
Mr. Williams said the Expo hosted events including a statewide floral design competition and several other community gatherings. He reported roughly 17,000 web interactions for the site in the quarter and said the office retooled its marketing strategy after limited return on prior ad purchases. “We fundamentally changed how this process worked. We built our own grant portal,” Williams said, describing features that let applicants save applications, reuse prior data year to year and access training videos.
Williams said HOT grant applications opened May 4 and close May 18, with the grant committee meeting scheduled for May 27 and a return to commissioners for approval June 2; award notices were expected to go out August 8. He also discussed fleet usage (about 17,000 miles driven in Q1) and estimated the combined vehicle program saved the county about $12,000 in the first quarter.
The manager noted staffing constraints at the Expo (five employees cover extensive grounds) and highlighted ongoing maintenance needs for certain buildings used for cattle sales and large events. He encouraged commissioners and the public to use the new portal and contact the Expo office with questions.
No formal decisions were taken on funding allocations at the meeting; Williams said awards will return to the court after committee review.
