At its April 23 meeting, Community Board 11’s transportation discussion turned to a proposed DOT study to close Exit 9 off I‑95 southbound near Gunhill Road. Transportation chair (Rabbi) explained the proposed change and moved that the board send a formal letter objecting to the study.
Board members argued the exit serves as a critical lifeline for Co‑op City residents, teachers and other commuters and that closing it would force long detours through Bay Plaza and other arterial routes. One board member said the closure would "cut off a lifeline" for Section 5 of Co‑op City. The motion to send a letter of opposition was seconded and the board recorded one opposition vote and one abstention (Cynthia Rodriguez abstained); the motion carried.
The board instructed staff to prepare a letter documenting community opposition and to include rationale based on traffic impacts and community reliance for submission to NYSDOT.
