Trustees hear summer reading plans, internship pilot and bilingual outreach push

Library trustees on Monday heard staff present the library’s summer reading plan, which staff said will run from June 1 through July 31 under the theme "Plant a Seed Read." A staff presenter told the board the program mix will include family story times and performers, a bubble show, adult craft workshops and recurring teen events such as a Mario Kart tournament.
"We are in full swing of summer reading prep right now," the presenter said, describing regular planning meetings and a larger summer team after recent hires. Staff also described a proposed teen internship pilot: outreach to high schools, an application and interview process, roughly 40 hours of service per intern and a goal of recruiting up to 10 interns to help with event prep, signups and youth-focused social media content.
Trustees pressed staff on outreach and accessibility. Staff said they plan earlier marketing to reach schools before the school year ends, will publish a calendar of signups for workshop-style events, and will distribute materials via the library website, social media and a partner contact list. One trustee asked that headline artwork and captions for program materials be bilingual (Spanish and English); staff said they are already working to translate as many flyers as possible.
The board also discussed logistics for special events. Staff confirmed the library will host a Bach/Carmel Block Festival performance (material in meeting documents listed the event for Friday, July 3, 3–4 p.m.), and noted that some indoor events may surprise patrons searching the stacks. Staff said calendar and promotional details will be finalized as graphic design and communications teams prepare final materials.
Next steps: staff will finalize the event calendar and marketing collateral and indicated that specific staff (Andrea and Sarah were named as potential presenters) may brief the board with more details at a subsequent meeting.
