Isanti to buy new municipal tractor, will keep repaired unit as backup

The Isanti City Council approved amending the capital improvement plan to purchase a replacement utility tractor after staff reported a critical part failure on the city’s Ford 545D that cannot be sourced. Josh Becker, the city’s public works foreman, explained the PTO shaft gear needed is discontinued and that a local machinist can modify a replacement but with no durability guarantee.
Staff recommended buying a John Deere 5075E under a Sourcewell state bid at the quoted price and presented warranty and rental options. Council members compared alternate quotes, warranty terms and rental costs, and discussed keeping the older unit if repaired. After discussion, council authorized purchasing the new tractor and directed staff to repair and retain the Ford 545D as long as practical; the motion carried unanimously.
Becker said parts ordered and machining work had costs that made replacement the fiscally prudent choice for reliable operations. Council noted older machines sometimes last longer in heavy-duty municipal use but expressed support for modern warranties and local dealer support.
Next steps: staff will proceed with the purchase under the presented bid, install requested accessories (loader and turf tires), and arrange repair and continued use of the existing Ford 545D while it remains serviceable.
