New Prague proclaims Military Appreciation Week, recognizes students joining the armed forces

Mayor Dwayne Jurich read the proclamation at the start of the April 21 meeting, saying, "Now therefore, I, Dwayne Jurich, mayor, on behalf of the city council, proclaim May 25th through the 31st as military appreciation week with a special emphasis on students who have selected careers in the military," and urged the community to “thank young people in our community who have chosen to enter the military profession.”
Representatives from Beyond the Yellow Ribbon and the New Prague American Legion joined the council in honoring the students. Dwey Kosha, identified as co‑chair of the Scott County chapter of Beyond the Yellow Ribbon, described the group’s mission to support service members and their families and to help returning veterans connect with employment and community organizations.
Tom Watkin, assistant principal at New Prague High School, said the partnership between the school district, the city and veterans’ organizations makes the recognition meaningful for students and their families. "This is a partnership that on behalf of the school district we look forward to for many years to come," he said.
Council members and veterans called each student forward by name and branch of service and posed for a group photograph with the mayor. City and community leaders emphasized that the city’s recognition is intended as community support for students and their families as they transition to military service.
What’s next: The proclamation is ceremonial; there were no formal policy actions attached to the recognition. Staff and local partners will continue program efforts to connect service members and families with resources through Beyond the Yellow Ribbon and veteran organizations.
