Students showcase schools, arts and athletics at Brea Olinda board meeting

Students from multiple Brea Olinda campuses presented school updates and were recognized during the April 23 board meeting.
Ara Vista students and Principal Eric Barentos highlighted the school’s growth in dual‑language immersion classrooms and AVID schoolwide practices, citing demographics (about 45% socioeconomically disadvantaged; 37% enrolled in dual immersion at Ara Vista) and attendance gains tied to school‑wide engagement efforts. “When students feel safe, included, and excited to learn, we don’t just show up, we shine,” a student presenter said.
Oolinda and Brea Canyon student councils outlined music, arts, robotics and STEM programming, college‑and‑career work, and community events. Students described AVID binder nights, robotics competitions, walkthrough history projects and multicultural nights that drew strong family participation.
The board also recognized athletic achievements: BOHS cheer and stunt programs celebrated back‑to‑back CIF Southern Section Division 4 AAA championships, and several student athletes announced college plans during senior recognitions.
Superintendent Brenda Leon and trustees praised student speakers for their poise and the schools’ work on inclusion and academic supports. Board members encouraged presentations to remain part of future meetings as a way for trustees to hear directly from campuses and families.
The board continued with regular business after the presentations, including approving consent items and committee reports.
