The School Town of Munster board on April 13 authorized administration to submit a 103 flex waiver that would reduce the district’s instructional days from 180 to 177 in order to provide three full professional learning days.
Assistant Superintendent Miss Bergen told the board the district would still meet required instructional minutes and hours despite eliminating three days from the standard 180‑day calendar. The district used a similar waiver in 2024 that produced early‑release professional learning days; the new request seeks full professional learning days instead.
Staff presented two draft 2027–28 calendar versions. Version one assumes no waiver and keeps some early‑release half‑days; version two assumes waiver approval and converts three days into full professional learning days. Key features discussed included an August 11 school start, a week‑long fall break (proposed Oct. 11–15), pairing PSAT testing with parent‑teacher conferences, and designated e‑learning days for election days. Board members and administrators discussed effects on fall athletes and the logistical challenge of scheduling middle and high school open houses on the same evening.
Dr. Hicks and calendar staff said they would submit the waiver application promptly and await the state board’s decision; if approved the district would adopt the calendar that incorporates full professional development days. The board requested additional athletic schedule data and continued review before finalizing the calendar.
