Board recognizes student winners, a scholarship recipient and announces incoming principal; six retirees noted

The board opened the meeting with several recognitions for student and staff achievements and announced an incoming hire and retirement notices.

Students and coaches: The board honored regional winners of the African‑American History Academic Challenge hosted locally by 100 Black Men of Madison Incorporated, congratulating Savannah Oaks Middle School and Ron Area High School for advancing to a national competition in June 2026. The DECA chapter and its advisor Miss Odden were recognized for state and international advancement. Music students and ensembles were also applauded after strong festival results.

Scholarship: The board congratulated Jakla Powers for receiving the Taylor (Tilly) scholarship from the Boys & Girls Club of Dane County, a full‑tuition award for up to four years at an accredited university.

Personnel: Board announced the selection of Kirsten Hoen as incoming principal of Sugar (Sher) Creek Elementary with an effective date of July 1, 2026; the board and superintendent praised her equity focus and instructional leadership.

Retirements: The superintendent read a preliminary list of faculty and staff who have indicated plans to retire at year’s end, totaling 230 years of combined service. Named retirees included Julie Bay, Karen Bowers Caddy, Katherine Kolier, Carmen Curtis, Diane Liner, Lorie Martin and Karina Walsh (roles and years of service read aloud).

No votes were required for the recognitions; the board said formal retiree presentations will occur in May with more ceremonial acknowledgments.
