Fair manager outlines 2024 plans; commissioners approve Lineman’s Rodeo use of fairgrounds

Jessica Ericson, Broadwater County Fair Manager, briefed commissioners on fairboard activity and plans for the 2024 fair (theme: "Cowboy Boots and Country Roots," July 31–Aug. 4). She said a Northwestern Energy lighting rebate tied to a Greymont grant would help fund a permanent fence around a drain field and other electrical upgrades; the county completed phase one and two of the lighting upgrade and is awaiting one spec sheet from phase two before finalizing rebates.

Ericson said the fairboard is exploring different entertainment options (concert or multiple daytime acts such as a hypnotist or comedian), updated rental rates for the 4‑building and pavilion, and added keyed restroom access that can be rented separately from the 4‑building. She urged clearer rental signage to avoid conflicts and noted attorneys are reviewing a rodeo lease contract due in May.

Tabitha Dixon, secretary of the Montana Lineman’s Rodeo, described the rodeo events (pole rescue, speed climb, apprentice competitions, lantern ceremony, auctions, food trucks) and said the group strives to keep events local. Commissioners approved the rodeo's request to use the fairgrounds for July 19–20, 2024, and discussed insurance (listing Broadwater County as additional insured) and coordination with the fairboard for logistics and promotion.

The fairboard will consider how to use rebate funds, pursue permanent repairs to drainage fencing, and continue work on the rodeo lease with county counsel.
