The Stewartville City Council on Sept. 9 approved a series of routine items including a lot split for the Maple Brook Town Home Association, the hiring of a Sturville High School senior as a library page intern, and the purchase of a replacement Chevy Silverado for public works. The council also announced it would enter closed session under Minnesota Statute 13D.05 subd. 3(c) to discuss an offer to acquire a right-of-way at 2727 Highway 63 North.
On the Maple Brook lot split, staff and the planning commission said the request will permit the townhome association to deed the pond, bridge, spillway and trail currently maintained by the association to the city, clarifying ownership and removing maintenance-related liability; Council person Craig Anderson said planning had 'no problem with this' and the council approved the split by voice vote.
Council considered hiring Greta Ravenhorst as a library page intern at the entry-level pay grade discussed in the packet; the position was approved by motion and voice vote. Staff noted the position is expected to be part-time during the school year (generally under 10 hours per week) and closer to 20 hours per week during the summer.
On vehicle replacement, the council reviewed bids for a pickup replacement that the 2025 capital equipment plan budgets at $55,000. Bids noted in the meeting ranged from about $47,250 (an order for a 2026 model) to $56,772 (in-stock units); council discussion favored purchasing a local in-stock vehicle and the council approved the purchase of a Chevy Silverado by voice vote.
Near the end of the meeting Mayor Jimmy John King announced the council would go into a closed session under Minn. Stat. 13D.05 subd. 3(c) to discuss the price to offer for acquiring a right-of-way at 2727 Highway 63 North. The regular meeting was closed for that purpose.
Next steps: staff will process the approved lot-split paperwork, the hiring paperwork for the intern, finalize the truck purchase with the selected dealer, and return to closed session procedures for the right-of-way discussion as required by Minnesota statute.
