Roads: commissioners weigh shifting $200,000 into capital outlay for equipment

The Uvalde County road department requested reallocating $200,000 from materials into capital outlay to replace aging equipment and purchase newer but not brand‑new trucks and machinery.

At the workshop the road director explained the request would lower the materials line (discussed figures ranged from $650,000 down toward $450,000 or $400,000) while adding $200,000 for capital outlay to address failing truck beds, mowing equipment and to fund an equipment rebuild rather than surprise vehicle purchases. “Add 200,000 to capital outlay so I can get newer equipment,” the road representative said.

Commissioners debated the tradeoffs: materials buys yield more immediate pavement work, while equipment investment can improve efficiency and reduce long‑term costs. The road office noted petroleum and material prices have increased and could inflate paving costs by 30–40 percent; a one‑mile pavement job was cited as approximately $78,000 under prior estimates.

Commissioners and the director discussed precinct allocations (roughly $100,000 per commissioner for local paving) and the need for a plan that sequences paving and equipment purchases.
