Laconia School Board adopts revised student protest policy after clarifying language

At its April 21, 2026 meeting, the Laconia School Board approved Policy JIG (student protest, demonstration and strikes) after a brief discussion about wording and clarity. The policy was on its second read.

A board member raised a grammatical concern about a sentence in the first highlighted paragraph that, as edited, used the pronoun "they" without a clear subject. That member argued the sentence read more clearly and correctly if it referred directly to "students." "It's easy to read that as 'when students protest,' not 'when student protests happen,'" the board member said during the discussion. The policy committee also updated language later in the document, replacing the phrase "a bridge" with "effective" and adding a reference to staff's contractual school day.

Following discussion the board moved to adopt JIG with the agreed wording change. The motion was seconded by Sean (named as the second in the public record). The board chair called for the vote and announced the policy as adopted; the vote was announced in the meeting as 7–0.

The adopted change was procedural and focused on clarity and consistency in the policy's language; the board did not make further substantive changes to the policy text at this meeting. As noted during discussion, the policy committee will continue related work on other policies.

The board took no additional administrative action on the item beyond adoption.
