After extended negotiation the board amended the proposal, capping the initial municipal match program at $125,000 total (not per city) and requiring municipal cash matches, proof of expenses and that events be open to all county residents. The board also directed staff to work with the city of Lauder Hill to flesh out and return with a county kickoff event agreement (Item 54) with an itemized budget and legal sufficiency review; that item will return to the board for approval.
Municipal speakers from Lauder Hill, Deerfield Beach and others described youth clinics, international friendly matches and family fan‑zone events as means to connect visitors to local businesses and extend hotel stays. Commissioners pressed for clarity on whether police/fire costs, ticketed VIP sections or private vendor revenue would be eligible; the approved motion required staff to specify eligible expenditures and to reimburse municipalities only after verified documentation.
The vote followed amendments that sought to balance countywide promotional goals with fiscal safeguards and a desire by many commissioners to prioritize youth clinics and community activations over solely commercial watch parties.
What’s next: administration will draft standard agreements, an RFA/ application process and a list of permissible, reimbursable expenses; those documents and the Lauder Hill kickoff budget will return to the commission with legal review before payments are issued.
