Bruton City Council approves mosquito-control contract, YMCA pool schedule and surplus-vehicle sales

The Bruton City Council approved four consent resolutions, awarding a mosquito-control contract to Kevin's Spray Service, authorizing summer staffing with the Bruton YMCA and a pool schedule, approving the sale of surplus city vehicles, and moving one meeting date.
The council voted to award Resolution 26-0427-1 to Kevin's Spray Service after confirming there were two bidders. Councilor Jennings moved the resolution; the motion was seconded and carried with Councilor Bruton, Councilor Barton, Councilor Fleming and Councilor Jennings voting yes. During discussion Councilor Jennings raised concerns about last year’s spray truck speed through neighborhoods but said those issues appear to have been remedied and that Kevin plans to begin service next week. “If there are concerns as we move forward…we can address it with Kevin,” Jennings said.
Councilors also approved Resolution 26-0427-2 to amend services with the Bruton YMCA for summer staffing at the municipal pools. Brooke, a city staff member overseeing pool operations, confirmed the pools’ first Saturday opening will be May 16 and that weekday hours will resume after Memorial Day (May 25). Brooke said the pools will operate six days a week with Mondays reserved for maintenance. The councilor sponsoring the motion, Councilor Bruton, moved the measure; Councilor Jennings seconded it and the motion passed unanimously.
On Resolution 26-0427-3 the council authorized listing surplus vehicles for sale on the govdeals auction site. Staff said five vehicles are included on the current listing; one participant noted there had been references to a sixth vehicle and that additional units might be added to a future resolution. Councilors discussed that many of the vehicles are old, have mechanical problems and are not economical to repair. Councilor Barton moved the resolution, Councilor Bruton seconded, and the council approved it.
The council also approved Resolution 26-0427-4 to change next month’s meeting date from the 25th to the 26th, the day after Memorial Day. Councilor Bruton moved the change and Councilor Jennings seconded; the motion passed on recorded yes votes.
Earlier in the meeting the body approved the April 13, 2026 regular meeting minutes. A proclamation scheduled for the meeting was canceled after the invited guests said they could not attend. The mayor noted a community softball tournament at the YMCA park and, with no one requesting public comment, the council adjourned.
Actions recorded in the meeting included the four named resolutions and the minutes approval; each recorded motion was approved by the councilors who cast recorded yes votes.
