Webster Groves joins other cities in feasibility study for regional fire authority

Scott, speaking on behalf of council and city matters, told the commission that the Webster Groves city council has joined other mid-county municipalities in a feasibility study to explore a regional fire authority.
Scott said the study will examine whether multiple cities could consolidate fire services to allocate resources more efficiently, improve purchasing power and potentially reduce costs. He said Clayton, Shrewsbury and Webster have already passed resolutions to join the study and that participating cities will share the study’s cost. "It's just a study — got to see if it's feasible, got to see if it's workable, got to see if it's affordable," he said.
Scott outlined the sorts of changes the study would evaluate, including whether the current complement of chiefs and assistant chiefs could be reduced through attrition and whether shared purchasing would lower equipment costs. He said the review will likely take about six months and that the city will monitor impacts on service levels, governance and personnel.
No formal policy decision or consolidation vote occurred at this meeting; Scott described the resolution to join the study as a preliminary step. Commissioners asked clarifying questions about control, local identity and potential savings; Scott acknowledged past studies had returned mixed political results even when efficiency gains were identified.
