During the meeting, a staff representative said appliances were intentionally held out of the prime bid so the district could buy them through a vendor with better pricing and install them in‑house.
The board also discussed asbestos testing and abatement costs. An initial air‑testing price per room cited during early planning approached $10,000; staff reported negotiating that to about $3,600 per room with a qualified company and organizing testing to cover multiple rooms at once to reduce repeated fees. Asbestos and air‑quality testing will be completed while students are out of the building; staff said the first two rooms would be cleared and construction would begin immediately afterward.
Operations staff explained the district will act as the general contractor for portions of the work (using in‑house engineers and electricians) to avoid a management fee and reduce overall costs. School leaders said they expect the renovated rooms to be ready by the second week of August and confirmed the project will be covered by this year’s budget/reserves.
No members spoke in opposition; the motion to approve the award moved forward as part of consent items and passed by voice vote.
Next steps: staff will finalize purchase and installation plans for appliances, coordinate asbestos abatement and testing, and proceed to construction so rooms are ready for the fall term.
