The Schererville Town Board of Zoning Appeals on April 28 approved a variance allowing homeowners Michael and Cynthia Zamora to build a 6-foot privacy fence that extends 20 feet past the 30-foot building line on their corner lot at 2516 Ticonderoga Street.
"Our main concern is safety on that corner," Michael Zamora said during the meeting, explaining that he and his wife want a larger fenced area to protect their children and pets from traffic that cuts through the neighborhood during peak hours. The Zamoras said the new fence would match an existing subdivision fence across Patterson Street and would be roughly 3 feet from the front of their house, leaving about 10 feet of yard between the house and the proposed fence.
Board members confirmed that notices and publication were in order before petitioner testimony. During questions, board members asked about the fence's proximity to a nearby stone column and whether the existing fence at the building line would be removed; the petitioners said they would remove the existing fence and that the proposed line would land approximately 5–10 feet from the column. Town staff told the board there is no plan for a sidewalk on the north side of the petitioners' property.
A motion to approve BZA case 26-4-20 was made by board member Michael O'Rourke and seconded by Tom Curris. The board approved the variance on a roll-call vote: Curris, Jarvis, Olzuski, O'Rourke and Davis voted yes.
The board also took several administrative actions before adjourning. Members voted to reschedule BZA cases B26-4-21 through E-26-4-24 to June 22, 2026; that motion was made by Mr. Jarvis and seconded by Mr. Olzuski and passed by roll call. The board approved findings of fact for BZA case 26-3-19 (6849 Tucson Road), a previously considered variance, and voted to reschedule the May BZA meeting to June 22, 2026.
The meeting concluded with the board adjourning after completing business for the evening.
