The Germantown Municipal School District board recognized two local nominees for Tennessee School Boards Association awards and approved both nominations by roll call.
Mr. Manuel introduced student nominee Sasha Jurggovich (appearing with variant spellings in the transcript) for the TSBA Student Excellence Award, describing her as founder of "Hugs from Houston," a multi-state volunteer effort connecting more than 150 student volunteers to hospitals, teachers and retirement communities; a DECA president who grew membership and competition success; and an active student ambassador. "Whether she's leading, serving, or telling a story of GMSD, Sasha is an excellent candidate for this award," the presenter said.
The board also honored Joanie Hester as the district’s volunteer nominee, detailing years of PTO leadership, the creation of community events and her recent service as board president and interim executive director of the Germantown Education Foundation. Mr. Manuel credited Hester with expanding grant funding and refocusing the foundation’s engagement with schools.
Vice Chair Griffith moved to approve both nominations for TSBA recognition; the motion was seconded and passed unanimously by roll call. Board members praised both nominees’ leadership and community service during the meeting.
