Planning commission approves Skyidge plat revision to convert private road to county road

The Bedford County planning commission approved a revision to the Skyidge subdivision plat that changes a previously private, gated road into a county road.

Commissioners heard a history of the Skyidge approval, which dates to 2001, before county zoning rules, and staff said the subdivision never fully developed. Mark, the county road superintendent, told the commission the Curl brothers, the current property owners, had improved the road to county specifications, including an extruded curb for drainage, and that he would complete county inspections and sign paperwork if the commission amended the plat. "They have went in and built that road to my county regulations," Mark said.

Commissioners discussed access and common‑area easements for a pond on the site and confirmed documentation showing a 20‑foot ingress/egress easement from the roundabout toward lot 10 to permit maintenance access. After discussion a commissioner moved to amend the plat to change the private road to a public county road; the motion was seconded and approved by voice vote.

The action will allow the county to accept the road to county standards and gives future buyers the protections of a public road rather than a gated private way. Commissioners and staff also discussed developer warranties: the sellers agreed to a one‑year warranty on road work before handing over maintenance responsibilities.
