At the start of the April 27 meeting Gary, representing NAMI Clackamas, spoke to the council about programs the local affiliate offers and accepted the city’s Mental Health Awareness Month proclamation.
Gary emphasized stigma as the primary obstacle to early help — noting a frequently cited average delay of 11 years between symptom onset and help seeking — and described free peer‑to‑peer classes, family education courses, multiple weekly support groups, suicide bereavement groups and outreach to adults in custody. He promoted NAMI’s upcoming community events, including NAMI Walks (May 16, Peninsula Park) and a theater night fundraiser; he also brought a therapy dog, “Carlin,” and distributed outreach materials.
Council unanimously adopted the proclamation recognizing May 2026 as Mental Health Awareness Month and thanked NAMI Clackamas for its local outreach and volunteer work.
