Canton boosters offer $39,999 scoreboard; board hears first reading

Roberts described functional limitations of the current nearly‑30‑year-old scoreboard—corroded wiring, repeated malfunctions and the inability to display swimmer names, heats or running scores—and argued a modern system would improve athlete and spectator experience and position the facility for hosting championship‑level meets.
She said the proposed system is humidity‑rated, integrates with existing timing equipment, and includes a 165-inch poolside LCD video wall, a poolside satellite screen and a turnkey timing solution. Ongoing maintenance would be supported through sponsorships; Roberts told the board the district would have editorial control over sponsor ads and that the boosters would approve materials before public display.
Board members asked whether the natatorium had the necessary electrical and data infrastructure for installation; Roberts answered that the selected turnkey vendor would supply what was needed and no additional district infrastructure investment was required. Members also confirmed the boosters and donor would front costs rather than the district and asked about examples of similar systems at other schools.
Roberts requested three approvals at a future meeting: (1) approval of the SwimNerd purchase, (2) approval of the funding model using booster support and sponsorships, and (3) approval of an installation timeline with completion by Aug. 1 for the girls’ swim season. The presentation was taken as a first reading and the board will revisit the item for final consideration at the next meeting; no formal board action was taken this evening.
Representative speakers and supporters on stage included parent volunteer Mr. Ellinger, who assisted in vendor outreach and procurement logistics. The board thanked Roberts and the booster club for the proposal and asked staff to bring final documents for consideration at the next meeting.
