Henry County approves participation in opioid settlements and accepts $1.2M opioid-abatement grant for crisis response

The Henry County Board of Supervisors voted to participate in proposed opioid-related claims settlements for several remnant defendants and approved a related opioid-abatement grant to expand regional crisis-response capacity.
After convening in closed session, the board adopted a resolution authorizing county participation in settlements associated with six remnant defendants (companies named in the resolution) and directed the county attorney and county administrator to execute necessary documents to effectuate participation. The motion carried by unanimous vote.
Earlier in the meeting staff described a related funding action: Henry County, acting as fiscal agent for a regional project with neighboring localities and Piedmont Community Services, received $1,197,347 from the Virginia Opioid Abatement Authority and the board approved an additional appropriation for that amount. "The grant does not require local match and Piedmont Community Services will manage most aspects of the project with grant funding for review," staff told the board.
County officials said the regional project will expand support capacity for individuals experiencing mental-health and substance-use-related emergencies. The board's resolution to participate in settlements and the appropriation for the abatement grant were both approved by unanimous voice vote.
What's next: County attorneys and administrators will execute settlement documents as required and Piedmont Community Services will proceed with managing the grant-funded project activities. The board directed staff to carry out implementation steps identified in the funding memorandum.
