Rising Sun reviews MML-urged task force to study state, county revenue sharing

Town Administrator Cal and Mayor Marian briefed the board April 24 on Resolution 2026-02, a Maryland Municipal League initiative asking municipalities to support creation of a task force to study state and county revenue-sharing with towns such as Rising Sun.
Cal said the task force would examine whether local governments are receiving a fair share of revenues and gave a practical example: towns typically do not receive hotel-tax revenue even when tourism increases local demands on roads and police. "If the town of Rising Sun had a hotel in it ... we don't get a cut of that revenue," Cal said, stressing that town services can be strained by tourism-related wear and safety needs.
Mayor Marian said the last comprehensive study of revenue sharing was in the late 1960s, arguing that the changing fiscal landscape warrants a fresh look. "One of the biggest things ... the last time that they actually studied this was in the late 1960s," she said.
The mayor and town administrator described the initiative as timely; the transcript records that the legislation establishing the task force is on the governor's desk and is expected by town officials to be signed, after which the task force would be constituted.
No formal vote on Resolution 2026-02 was recorded in open session during the meeting.
