Sykesville Parks commissioners debrief Easter egg hunt and plan summer events, banners and parade float

Commissioners said many parents reported difficulty hearing announcements during the egg hunt and that some attendees ignored the starter directions. Suggestions to improve the event included color-coded eggs for age groups, staggered start times (for example older kids starting at 9:30 a.m. with younger children at 10 a.m.), additional and better-placed speakers, clearer festive boundary markers instead of caution tape, and reducing music during announcements.
The commission praised volunteers, including several Century High School students, and confirmed public works collected large items left for pickup along trails. Commissioners also noted leftover trash volume and planned to review survey results from the event organizer, Drew.
On programming, the commission confirmed Sykesville Cinema will show 'A Bug's Life' on June 13 and discussed complementary activities such as face painting, a bug photo contest using the Seek app, crafts, and themed food options. Commissioners agreed they will coordinate with Piney Run Park and Impact volunteers to fill activity gaps and will revisit ideas at the next meeting.
Signage discussion produced a tentative design direction: a brighter color palette (gold/black or yellow/black), 'Sykesville Cinema' prominently placed, and wording such as 'Second Saturday at sunset, June–October.' Commissioners asked staff to produce mock-ups for review to comply with open-meetings rules.
Parade float planning included a nature/park-bench theme for the mascot 'Sparky,' options to reuse wood and donated fake trees, securing trees in weighted buckets, and testing seating for the mascot; commissioners discussed materials, volunteer build days, and safety measures for children who may walk beside the float.
A motion to adjourn followed the agenda items; commissioners approved the February and March minutes earlier in the meeting.
