County to accept Styrofoam at East Center after foam-densifier installation

Matt Purvis told board members that the county will unveil foam densifying equipment at East Center with a public event the following morning and will begin accepting Styrofoam there. "We are unveiling our foam densifying equipment. So, starting tomorrow ... we will be accepting foam at East Center," he said.
Purvis described the unit as a shipping-container-sized machine that compacts foam into dense bricks that a local partner will use for products such as picture frames and potentially materials for tiny homes. He said the program is currently limited to traditional Styrofoam (packaging and to-go containers) and that other foams (e.g., packaging around electronics) may not be accepted; patrons should bring questionable items to the center and staff will advise.
Council members asked whether the foam must be cleaned; Purvis said the accepted Styrofoam is typically packaging foam and that staff will advise when in doubt. The board was invited to an on-site demonstration and staff said the council office had previously circulated an invitation that would be re-sent.
