Roxbury students earn record number of Seals of Biliteracy

Roxbury High School celebrated a record number of New Jersey Seals of Biliteracy for the Class of 2026, district staff said, with 61 students earning at least one seal and a total of 68 seals awarded because several students earned distinctions in more than one language.
"We had 61 students total achieve the Seal of Biliteracy this year," said Matt Tro, the district's supervisor for social studies and world languages, who told the board the program honors students who demonstrate proficiency in English and another language. He said students showed proficiency across reading, writing, speaking and listening and that many schools and colleges increasingly recognize the award.
Student speaker Taylor Shaw recounted persisting across multiple test attempts to pass the Spanish Seal of Biliteracy. "After four tries, passing this test was so very empowering," she said, crediting district teachers and staff for support.
Tro listed languages represented among recipients, including Spanish, Italian, French and a range of home languages such as Portuguese, Russian, Ukrainian, Polish, German, Tamil and Filipino. He said roughly 20% of the Roxbury High graduating class will carry the distinction on their diplomas this year.
The district plans a public Seal Night event to celebrate recipient achievements and provide families information about the distinction's academic and postsecondary benefits.
