Public Property says soil testing requires daily environmental oversight for about six weeks

A Public Property project manager told the Board that soil characterization by Verdantas requires an environmental scientist on site daily for roughly six weeks during intense soil movement and weekly inspections to meet Rhode Island DEM controls.
At the March 9 Board of Contract and Supply meeting, Ben Wallace, project manager with Public Property, described newly identified soil conditions that require expanded environmental oversight. Wallace said Verdantas, the environmental consultant engaged during design and testing, performed pre-construction soil characterization and recommended on-site environmental-scientist oversight during a period of intensive soil movement.
"They'll be there daily for about a 6-week period of intense soil movement," Wallace said, adding that Verdantas had conducted the pre-construction testing and that the oversight is needed to manage stockpiles and controls to meet Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management requirements. Wallace said staff will also do weekly visual inspections of stockpiles and take steps to prevent soil from migrating to nearby parcels.
The board accepted the explanation and proceeded to consider the related change order and contract approvals as part of the agenda review.
