Mayor announces provisional interim city administrator to begin June 1

The mayor told the Monroe City Council on April 28 that the city’s search for a permanent city administrator produced no finalist and that the recruitment will be closed and readvertised in the fall.
To maintain continuity, the mayor said he will make a provisional interim appointment as authorized in the city handbook and named Ben Wam (the city’s human resources and IT director) to serve as interim city administrator effective June 1, 2026. "Ben will work closely with Deborah Knight until her final day on May 31st to ensure a smooth transition," the mayor said. The mayor added that the interim appointment will be presented to council on May 12 as a provisional appointment agreement that allows Wam to return to his HR/IT position if a permanent administrator is later hired.
Council members thanked city leadership for a careful recruitment process and expressed support for Wam in the interim role. The mayor said the current recruitment will be paused until fall to allow staff to focus on the budget process for 2027–28.
City staff emphasized the appointment is provisional and that a formal provisional appointment agreement will be brought to council for consideration at the May 12 meeting.
